THREE deceased media personalities were honored for their contribution to nation-building in the field of journalism during the unveiling of markers in Argao, Cebu led by Mayor Edsel Galeos and Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale.

The late Cerge M. Remonde , Wilfredo A. Veloso and Clodualdo K. Bajenting, who were all born and raised in the southern town, had a street named after them.

They were also all connected with Sun.Star Daily (now Sun.Star Cebu).

The Argao Municipal Council passed resolution 215 last Aug. 11, adopt- ing an ordinance officially naming the street from the corner of Isidro Kintanar St. stretching to Zamora St., commonly known as Carlock St., the Cerge Remonde St. in Barangay Lamacan. “It is worthwhile to honor and r e member the great contributions of the late press secretary to the development of the municipality, especially the construction of the sports complex of Argao,” read the resolution.

‘Inspiration’

“It is but fitting and appropriate to perpetuate the memory of a man whose achievements in life should be made as an inspiration to the young people of Argao,” the resolution added.

Remonde was born on Dec. 21, 1958. His father died when he was only eight months old.

Despite growing up without a father, he helped his family out of poverty by going to school on a scholarship and graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Visayas.

Remonde was national chairman of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas for six terms.

He became press secretary in 2001, head of the Government Mass Media Group in 2004, National Anti-Poverty Commission lead convenor in 2006, Presidential Manager Staff director-general in 2009 and press secretary again

until his death.

Resolution 216 adopted an ordinance officially naming the road stretching from the corner of Dr. Teodorico S. Kintanar St. to the corner of the PLDT office Wilfredo A. Veloso St. in Barangay Poblacion.

Veloso was first connected with The Republic News before he became a columnist and news copy consultant of Sun.Star Daily.

“His career in journalism spanned half a century and he is best remembered for his wisdom in sports journalism that he selflessly shared to the Cebuanos and to the new generation of sports writers,” read the resolution.

Resolution 217 adopted an ordinance officially naming the road stretching from the corner of Isidro Kintanar St. to the corner of M.J. Cuenco St. to Clodualdo Bajenting St. in Barangay Poblacion.

Annual activity

Bajenting was a correspondent of Manila Chronicle and a reporter of The Republic News and Sun.Star Daily.

“He was known for his smart approach in the practice of sports and political journalism and for unselfishly sharing this passion to the Cebuano people,” the resolution stated.

All the three resolutions were authored by Municipal Councilor Annabelle Almirante-Birondo.

Galeos said the unveiling of the markers yesterday coincided with the Municipal Government’s annual activity of honoring all Argawanons who brought great honor to the town.

The project of honoring deceased Cebu journalists was initiated by lawyer Pachico A. Seares, executive director of the Cebu Citizens-Press Council.

Seares attended the unveiling ceremony together with other media personalities, such as Bobby Nalzaro of GMA 7, Choy Torralba of radio dyRF, lawyer Eddie Barrita of the Philippine News Agency, KBP Cebu chapter president Jun Tagalog, Junnex Napallacan of radio dyLA and lawyer Elias Espinoza of Sun.Star Cebu.

In her message, Magpale said the three late mediamen deserved to be honored because they wrote stories that promote good public service.

“We in government service consider the media as our partner in informing the people of what we are doing,” she said.
