Sex with animals

- BOBBY NALZARO (bobby.nalzaro@yahoo.com)

THERE is a newsroom cliche that “if a dog bites a man, it’s no longer news.” But “if a man bites a dog, that’s news.” A good banner headline would be “a man raped a dog.” And that’s exactly what happened in Cubacub, Mandaue City. Habal-habal (motorcyclefor-hire) drivers allegedly witnessed a man raping a dog last week. The man was so drunk that he forgot he was having sex with a female dog. When police investigated the matter, the man claimed he was having sex with a female. The investigator said “yes, it was a female, but a female dog.”

The city veterinarian of Mandaue and the Island Rescue Organization, a group of animal welfare advocates, told the dog’s owner to file a case against the man. But is sexual assault on animals included in the law that protects animal’s rights, or the Animal Welfare Act or Republic 10631, which amended certain sections of Republic Act 8495, or the Animal Welfafe Act of 1998? No, according to Sun.Star Cebu public standard editor Atty. Pachico Seares. The law only mentions “cruelty” against animals. Is rape an act of cruelty? Your opinion is as good as mine.

Maybe the legislators who crafted the law forgot during deliberation that there are sick and crazy people who want animals as their sex objects rather than human beings. Maybe they have to amend the law to include sexual assault on animals as an offense and punishable by death penalty. That’s if the animal victim will file a case. The accused will only be exempted from any criminal liability if he “marries” the victim. Butangi!

But why force the issue when the dog owner is not keen on filing a case against the alleged rapist? The owner said he will just wait for his dog to become pregnant and give birth to a human being. Atong huwatom og unsay ipanganak sa iro. Tawo ba o iro lang gihapon.

This story reminds me of a joke. A wife consulted her doctor about her husband’s sexual aggression. The wife said “Doc, my husband always wants to do it ‘doggy style’.” The doctor answered, “Ah, no problem because different styles and exhibitions will make your relationship more intimate and that will add color to your sexual life.” The wife retorted, “But Doc, my husband wants to do it in the plaza.” Pagkatoytoy!

Another animal rape case that hogged the headline involved a man and a pig in a mountain barangay in Tabugon town last week. Not only did the man allegedly have sex with the pig once, but he had sex with the pig five times. The incident reportedly took place inside a piggery. The pig’s owner allegedly walked in on the man with his pants down. The man then fled, leaving his slippers behind. The pig owner, though, was not able to identify the rapist. Maayo gani kay wala mosinggit ang baboy, “Bakit mo ako binababoy?”

I think pigs are not protected under the animal welfare act because they can be butchered anytime, especially during special occasions. Wala nay lechon, humba, adobo ug nilat-ang tiil sa baboy kon i-bawal ang pag-ihaw og baboy. Wala’y lami ang kaon. So the pig owner can’t file a complaint against the rapist.

I don’t know what’s going on in our society right now.

Talking of pets and hobbies, last Saturday, I attended a seminar about raising and keeping Koi, a kind of Japanese fish with different color variations, at the Parkmall in Mandaue City. I did not intend to attend the event because I’m not a Koi lover. I don’t even know what it is. But I was there because I escorted our GMA/RGMA sales and marketing director RJ Seva, who was one of the guest speakers.

In attendance were mostly Chinese-Filipino businessmen who are Koi lovers. I realized then that it’s an expensive hobby. Do you know how much a Koi fish costs? A small fry costs between P50,000 and P75,000. You have to culture it in a pond in your backyard, monitor the water’s temperature and feed the fish special food. Some are making a business out of it but they only have a limited market because it is too expensive. Some buy the fry from Japan. They are just doing it for hobby and fun. Dili na lang ko magapilapil anang klaseng hobby kay di ta maka- afford. Maayo pay mamasol og tilapia didto sa ilang Tito Causin’s tilapyahan sa Mantayupan, Barili. Malingaw pa ta.
