Fun run for a cause
Visit. We were in General Santos city last week on an official trip with Helping Hands Marketing founder Hildi Montesclaros, a.k.a. Ate Ging. She is the producer and our co-host of As Time Goes By, a weekly musical program on CCTN channel 47. During the visit, we dropped by the studio of the Socsargen Broadcasting Network Inc. Radyo Alerto, a broadcast outfit owned by Rep. Manny Pacquiao. There we met veteran drama writer/ director Fermin Gomez who is now handling a daily talk program. A lovely lady named Jazzy is his co-host. Gomez used to write a number of radio dramas when he was still based in Cebu.
Programs. During the visit, we learned that Radyo Alerto signs on at 4 a.m. and signs off at 12 midnight. Its programs are mostly in the news and public affairs format and it’s one of the well-listened to radio stations in the Socsargen area. In fact, during the interview that Gomez did to us and Montesclaros, a number of Radyo Alerto listeners texted to inform us that they were tuning in to the program. Also during our visit, Montesclaros commissioned Gomez to handle a one-hour program titled Takna sa Bio-Troff every day, from 2 to 3 p.m., whose format is to promote her herbal products. In Cebu, Montesclaros has another radio program over dyHP titled Gabayan sa Kaayohan. It is now on its 10th year as a radio presentation. The latest survey showed that it is the number one radio program in the 8-9 p.m. slot.
Misleading. Have you noticed an ongoing television advertisement showing a classroom scene where a teacher is asking her students to spell the word “hotdog” and one of the pupils spelling out a particular hotdog brand? To us, this particular commercial is misleading. It actually teaches a wrong lesson to the children who are also televiewers. Will somebody in the advertising board do something? What’s happening to the “truth in advertising” policy?
Responsible. Of course, we understand the side of the advertiser and the creator of this particular commercial. They simply want to attract the attention of the consuming and buying public. Fine, but do they have to mislead the public, especially the children, in their quest to sell this particular hotdog brand? We call on them to be responsible in their ad presentation and hope that they will withdraw this erroneous commercial and replace it with something that is truly educational.
Run. Our good friend Fr. Jun Gutierrez, parish priest of the San Isidro Labrador parish in Calidngan, Carcar City, says he is organizing a fun run dubbed Dagan Ko Halad Ko on Oct. 25. According to him, the event that covers 21 kilometers, 10 kilometers and 3 kilometers is designed to raise funds to build a prayer room in his parish church. Those interested to join may call or text cellphone number 09999990912.
