Mayor’s night and cultural ties
Leslie Reyes, protocol officer of Cebu City, shared a few photos and insights on the Mayor’s night and appreciation dinner for Cebu’s sister cities, and foreign and local delegates who joined the 2015 Sinulog Fiesta. Dinner for Filipino-Canadians
Cebu’s best bet, Ambassador
Francisco L. Benedicto, was accorded the highest accolade by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) by naming a conference room in the DFA after him, in recognition of his unprecedented services as Ambassador in Singapore, Korea, Canada, Brazil, India and Beijing. Recently, he hosted a dinner cultural show for some 200 visiting Filipino-Canadians at the New White Gold House Restaurant. The USJ-R Allef (University of San JoseRecoletos Amparito L. Lhuillier Educational Foundation scholars), Sinulog Idol first runner-up Joie Catamora and Adelante performers, as well as the Benedicto and Speechcom singers entertained the guests, which also included media colleagues Nelia Neri, Jimmy Picornell, Flor Ynclino, Cookie Newman, Thea Riñen, Manny Rabacal, Loy Jurado, Jerry Tundag, Archie Modequillo, Chinggay Utzurrum and many more. We thank Gani and Gloria Villarojo for helping us in the production technical support; and White Gold House for the special Chinese dinner.
SP COMMUNICATION KIT. Codeswitching is a result of bilingualism and multi-lingualism not put into good balance. Thus, we have linguistic concoctions like “Taglish,” “Cebglish” and other dialect mixings in the classrooms, tri-media and social networking. Example: songs like Lab na lab kita; movies like
Praybeyt Benjamin etc. Correct usage and good conduct are likewise “corrupted,” like a branded laundry soap claims “it is betterer” or, stammering becomes novel with a TV ad uttering... “mmmmm.” (I love the food, but dislike the stuttering speech defect. One student liked the ad that he asked his teacher, “Teacher, do wee have test tday?”)
Vocabulary must be refined, but another TV commercial had a boy saying… “bantot!” (a crude Tagalog word) to his father. Good manners are ignored, when a girl snatched a piece of biscuit from a boy, then gave it to her “idol.” Effective Communication is not just a skill but an art and purveyor of values and good manners as well.
