Convicted killer to withdraw appeal
OTTAWA — “Canadian Psycho” Luka Rocco Magnotta is expected to withdraw an appeal of his conviction for murdering a Chinese student, then sexually-abused and dismembered his corpse, local media said on Tuesday.
The 32-year-old initially admitted killing Lin Jun in May 2012, but then pleaded not guilty at trial in one of Canada’s most sensational homicide cases.
At trial, his lawyers argued he was insane and required psychiatric treatment, not prison.
The verdict, they later argued, was “unreasonable and unsupported by the evidence,” while accusing the judge of multiple errors in instructing the jury.
Public broadcaster CBC said Magnotta would announce on Wednesday that he is withdrawing his appeal of the verdict and life sentence.
No reasons were given.
