Last-termers in another vein for Manny and Money

- AL S. MENDOZA (alsol47@yahoo.com)

MANNY Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. are into their “last terms.” For Pacquiao, the last term would mean his third and final stint as congressman of Sarangani. That is, if he runs— and wins anew as Sarangani representative—in May 2016.

For Mayweather, the last term would mean his sixth and last fight under Showtime’s contract. That’d be in September as he had promised, ending a 6-fight Showtime contract worth $100 million for the fighter that proudly calls himself, “The Money.” Their commonality ends there. In this beloved land of ours, all elective offices allow for a maximum nine straight years, divided into three threeyear stints. The exception? The senator, who serves a maximum 12 straight years divided into six years for each rotation.

As for the president of the republic, only a one six-year term is allowed by the Constitution. No reelection.

Will Pacquiao run for senator next year?

“No definite plans on that yet,” he said.

Being “The Money,” Mayweather could be torn between selecting a nondescript for a foe in September over a rematch with Pacquiao next year, possibly May.

Against a “horse with no name” in front of Mayweather atop the roped arena, the fight might flop at the tills. But with Pacquiao as Mayweather’s foe anew, the promise of another windfall won’t be farfetched.

It may not be as lucrative as the May 3 (Philippine time) non-mayhem in Las Vegas but who knows? Never ever forget: It is boxing where suckers breed like rabbits.

A year after the “Battle for Greatness,” the appetite will be whetted again, thanks to Pacquiao’s fully-healed shoulder—and also to Mayweather’s time-tested trick to lure unsuspecting spectators to his parlor.

If, to Pacquiao now would be an obsession to get back at Mayweather, “The Money” would be just too willing to oblige—even with lesser moolah, this time. Not long after the rematch is done away with, the trilogy beckons.

Consider, too: If Mayweather’s next foe would prove as unknown as Koncz’s coconut, rejoice still. That could ensure a record-tying 49-0 for The Money.

Just imagine Mayweather gunning for win No. 50 against Pacquiao.
