UV stirs up coaching lineup
JUST a few weeks into the start of its title defense bid, the University of the Visayas had to make drastic changes not in its lineup but in its coaching staff.
UV basketball teams overall manager and Cebu first district Rep. Gerald Anthony “SamSam” Gullas Jr., slapped a onemonth suspension on Paserelle coach Jaymart Canoy for conduct unbecoming, effective immediately.
What that conduct was was kept under wraps by the UV management.
“First of all, let me correct it, Jaymart was not sacked, he was only suspended for a month. we are going to re-evaluate his status after one month. The management decided to suspend him for one month for the sole reason of conduct unbecoming of a coach. He will be officially suspended immediately, including the entire month of July. Come August, we will re-evaluate his status as head coach,” said Gullas.
In the meantime, the mentorship for the Passerelle and SBP teams will be given to Jonnel Maglasang, who is also tasked to assist UV college team head coach Gary Cortes. The team is in the thick of preparing for the Milo Cebu Passerelle title.
“Rest assured, that UV Passerelle and SBP teams will come prepared for the Milo tourna- ment under coach (Jonnel) Maglasang,” Gullas told Sun. Star Cebu.
Maglasang will get the help of the long-time UV Baby Lancers coach Delfin Pepito, Ronaldo Bucao, Abel Bungcaras and Kenneth Pepito.
Bucao, who is new to the team of coaches, is also tasked to assist Bungcaras at the Baby Lancers’ bench.
The team of coaches led by Canoy, Randy de la Pisa and Pepito has brought numerous national titles to the school – this includes the National Under 16 title, which they won in Baguio City in 2011, the Batang PBA National title in May last year and the Milo Passerelle National title last December.
Canoy, de la Pisa and Pepito started the program in 2009, and in a short span of time, UV SBP and Passerelle team has won various local and national titles, because of the dedication and harmonious relationship of the coaches.
However, the harmonious partnership began to sour resulting to the bolting of de la Pisa from the Lancers’ camp. , and total distrust of the management to the leadership of the young Baby Lancers.
