23 nabbed for illegal fishing

AUTHORITIE­S arrested 23 persons for illegal fishing in the restricted seawaters off Barangay Nailon, Bogo City last Wednesday morning.

The city police led by SPO3 Vincent Flores Canama with the personnel of Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 7 and Bantay Dagat apprehende­d the fishermen on board two boats.

Most of the fishermen hail from Barangay Paril, San Isidro, Leyte.

The sea vessels were seized along with a box containing scad fish or tamarong worth P2,000, two fuel containers, a ring net, flash light and eight empty boxes.

Patrol

Canama and company were patrolling the area when they saw the suspects catching fish just three kilometers from the shore of Nailon.

They immediatel­y apprehende­d them.

The fishermen are Jonathan Dignos Ynot, Guidon Arsolon, Cresencio Nasule, Teban Cumayas, Mateo Arsolon, Dante Balunan, Aris Cantandija­n, Cris Dayon, Noel Malinao, Dario Adol, Gildo Lagat, Pio Gallo, Edgar Simbajon, Wilben Argao, Daniel Mar Naraja, Lobert Monterde, Hermelito Malinao, John Lorenz Lepiten, Jude Adol, Ceferino Lagat, Erlindo Dayon and Remildo Olidiana.

Ynot is the only resident of Bogo City.

Violation

They violated Republic Act 8550 or the 1998 Fisheries Code of the Philippine­s prohibits commercial fishing vessels from operating within municipal waters and the use of active fishing gear.
