Storm trooper, comedian, dancer in ‘rookie’ list
To be in a Star Wars movie is a dream for any actor. But for John Boyega, 23, the controversy that came with being cast as the first black storm trooper was overwhelming. But he soldiered on anyway. Not only is he in one of the most anticipated films of the year, Boyega is also one of People Magazine’s Ones to Watch 2015.
Every year, People Magazine presents a list of stars to watch out for, just as it annually crowns the Sexiest Man Alive and Most Intriguing People of the Year.
This year’s list also includes singer Tori Kelly, who wowed in this year’s MTV Video Music Awards; Francesca Eastwood, daughter of Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood and star of Heroes Reborn; and blossoming comedian Adam Devine.
The cast of Scream Queens is also in the list, although some of them are already popular from various projects like veteran actress Jamie Lee Curtis, Emma Roberts, Abigail Breslin and Lea Michele. Among the show’s newcomers are Keke Palmer, Skyler Samuels and Billie Lourd.
Another celebrity on the list is Maddie Ziegler, whose name may not ring a bell, but whose face is already familiar despite only being 12. She stars in Sia’s videos for the songs Chandelier and Elastic Heart and was also featured in Dance Moms.
Rami Malek, 34, is the lead in the breakout television hit Mr. Robot. If he had lucked out in Hollywood, Malek considered carpentry as his next option. “When I was younger, I used to make lamps and frames for art. I’d like to do something with my hands.”
Last year’s list included Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez and the famous mother Cristin Milioti from How I Met Your Mother and From A to Z.
