Press Freedom Week
We’re in that time of the year again when the Cebu media, at least for a week or so, set aside competition and bring to the fore camaraderie and cooperation. This is because of the celebration of the Press Freedom Week, which officially starts on Sunday, Sept. 20.
Prior to that, the Mr. and Ms. Press Freedom will be selected at the Bayfront Hotel tomorrow evening. The winners will lead the parade on opening day.
I accidentally bumped into one of Cebu’s soughtafter designers these days, Lemuel Rosos, and he excitedly shared that at least two lady candidates had been into his shop in Banawa and had tried on their gowns already.
Many activities have been lined up that are not only for the eyes but also for the brain and the entire body.
This is an event in Cebu that colleagues in other parts of the country could only wish to have in their own localities. To the Cebu media, happy celebration!
*** Since I purposely avoided being glued to my seat in front of the television, I chose shows that won’t require me to follow every episode. This way, no matter how many episodes I fail to watch, I won’t be wondering what happened then.
That was why Pinoy Big Brother was on top of my list for some seasons. The scenario changed though when Your Face Sounds Familiar (YFSF) started.
As we know, before Melai Cantiveros was declared winner in the first season, the other contestants had their own shining moments mimicking and imitating both local and foreign artists in looks, mannerisms, nuances and singing voice and style.
This is also the reason why I looked forward to the start of the new season. Comedian Eric Nicolas was adjudged the weekend’s top impersonator as Willie Revillame.
Will he be able to cling to the spot or will the others spring their own surprises? Sounds more exciting.
My personal favorite last Sunday was Denise Laurel. She was so gorgeous and sexy. Hopefully she will have her own moment soon though not necessarily as the grand winner. It’s still too early to guess.
*** I missed the opening night of YFSF, though, because I was in the boondocks that night attending a birthday party of a relative.
Although I was excited to see the pilot episode, I cannot do anything because GMA 7 was the only channel that can be seen in the area. No regrets, though. That night, Mel Chionglo’s
Magpakailanman replayed Alden Richard’s life story to give his fans the chance to see the path that their idol has trodden and how he almost gave up before he became a hot property these days (thanks to the AlDub team-up in Eat Bulaga).
Unexpectedly, I was able to relate to the story so much so that I almost did not notice the tears that found their way down my cheeks. I still have vivid memories of the last days of my mother on earth, that’s why. Been there, done that…or so they say. Whew!
*** The short time that the movie Ex With Benefits was promoted (company’s decision), the movie still made money such that its run in the movie houses had been extended.
Not minding some negative impressions from friends and acquaintances, I, together with another friend who used to be with the media, watched the movie.
And to our surprise, it was a good movie. It would not have been given Grade A by the Cinema Evaluation Board for nothing, you know.
Aside from good acting from the cast, the story itself has a redeeming value and it can inspire those who have experienced downward swings in their lives to still bounce back, aim high and reach for their dreams. In my list of things to do for this week is to watch
Silong, which is top-billed by Piolo Pascual and Rhian Ramos. Next in line will be Etiquettes for Mistresses, which is about “five women” having “one secret.”
The movie stars Claudine Barreto, Iza Calzado, Cheena Crab, Kim Chiu and Kris Aquino. Showing starts on Sept. 30. I’ll keep you posted.
