Gwen’s niece Amy Vachal in ‘The Voice 9’

A Filipino made it in the Blind Auditions of the ninth season of The Voice. She is Amy Vachal, a singer and songwriter from Brooklyn, New York.

She is the daughter of Deirdra Garcia-Vachal, younger sister of former governor now Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia (Cebu, 3rd district). Deirdra, on her Facebook account, also posted the promotional teaser for The Voice where Amy can be seen in the 14-second clip.

Last Sept. 10, Vachal tweeted: “I auditioned for The Voice Season 9! Tune in to the premiere on Sept. 21 to see how I did!” On Sept. 20 and 21, Vachal retweeted a series of tweets from The Voice’s official Twitter account. There was no mention if she made it or not.

Vachal already has her own following as a singer and has a regular gig in Rockwood Music Hall in New York. But the Filipina beauty is also into sports.

She’s an alumna of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania where she played both soccer and lacrosse.

Vachal’s soccer coach Todd Anckaitis told the Swarthmore Althletics that he once heard Vachal cover Billy Joel’s The Longest Time. Right then, he knew that Vachal’s music would take her to places.

“She later gave me her first CD of original music, and I was blown away. She is also a great artist and painter. In fact, she did a piece of art that still hangs over my couch at home,” said Anckaitis.

Based on her Facebook page, Vachal came home to the Philippines shortly after super typhoon Haiyan.

She posted a photo of a rainbow taken in the Philippines on Nov. 13, 2013.
