THE Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras made the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. volleyball finals their own playground, sweeping the college crowns and winning the girls’ title at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.

SWU beat USC, 21-25,2520,25-18,23 thanks to best striker Rommel Pepito, best setter Royet Varga and MVP Alden Dave Cabaron, to win the college title.

The rest of the men’s individual awardees are best server Mark Joseph Rocamora of the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R), best libero Jun Patrick Villaflor of University of Southern (USPF), and best blocker Gavinito Yongco of USC.

In the women’s division, SWU disposed of USJ-R, 25-18, 25-20, 31-29 to earn their sixth title in seven years.

“We only lost in 2012. I am satisfied with what the team showed during their game, they were playing as a team,” said SWU head coach Jordan Paca.

Frances Karen Derder was named the best server, Therese Rae Ramas the best setter, Renne Collen Gimeno the best blocker and Florelem Rodriguez as the MVP. USJ-R’s Jessa Marie Jorquia got the best attacker award while USC’s Criss Jessa Estoce was the best libero title.

In the high school division, the SWU beat the gritty Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-ADC), 25-13, 25-16 for its second title since 2011.

SWU also won most of the individual awards: best libero Kate Michelle Obenita, best setter Mary Angielou Castillo, best blocker Lorene Toring and MVP Wella Ortega, while the other awardees are best server Angelyna Grace Caniesgo of Ateneo and best attacker Janzel Bate of USJ-R.

In the boys’ division, USJ-R dethroned defending champion USC boys, 25-21,25-20, and Axel Abatayo got the best server award. Kleeve Marc Canumay was named the best blocker, while Canciano Llenos got the best attacker award.

USC’s Gamaliel John Enriquez won as the best libero, while the MVP title went to the captain of the losing finalist, Gwyndharelle Guy.

“We took advantage of our assets. My team has a lot of tall players and we utilized that by working on their quick plays and blocks and it worked,” said USJ-R head coach Roldan Potot.
