Ateneo de Cebu bags 15-Under title in STC Futsal Cup

- EKA

SACRED Heart SchoolAteneo de Cebu A bagged the Under-15 crown of the 1st St. Theresa’s College Futsal Cup at the STC Gym yesterday with a 3-2 win over top seed San Roque FC.

“In our last two games our goalkeeper was injured. So Arantxa Trebol, who is not a goalkeeper, took her place. Each and every one gave their best,” said Rose Ton Barinan, who is fresh from a Fifa Futsal Coaching Course here in Cebu. “We are a better team now. Our player played with a lot of heart. Though lacking our goalkeeper we never gave up. It was tied in the last few minutes of the game but we still managed to get a goal.”

SRFC took No. 1 seed with 15 points, while Ateneo A at second with 12.

This is the first time that STC has hosted a futsal tournament. It won’t, however, be the last. Aside from the Girls 15, it also had the Girls 18 division, which was going on at press time.

“This is our first futsal cup. We plan on having this yearly,” STC Parent Coordinator May Sarmiento, one of the organizers, told Sun.Star Cebu. “After winning the Palaro, we slowly convinced the sisters to open their eyes that the students can do both academics and sports at the same time. We want the children to learn how to manage their academics and sports and let it go hand in hand.”

STC currently has 30 active football players and the football community in the school is slowly growing.

The STC Futsal Cup is sponsored by Island Grill, Group B Motors, Central Seafoods Inc. and Bon Ace. The tournament’s donors are Profood International Corp. and former president of the STC Students Council Mrs. Maria Adora Prado.
