Team Cebu City athletes conquer PNG Visayas Qualifiers with 108 gold medals

TEAM Cebu City athletes overpowere­d the competitio­n in all fronts at the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission National Games Visayas Qualifying tournament, carting away 108 gold medals, 56 silvers and 31 bronze medals yesterday in Antique.

At the close of the Visayas eliminatio­n, TCC was a mile away from the rest of the competitio­n and on track to send a strong delegation to the national finals next year.

TCC won four gold medals and a silver in the archery competitio­n at the Antique National School field; 32 gold medals, 13 silvers and three bronzes in arnis at the Delegate Salazar Angel Elementary School; 11 golds, 8 silvers and three bronzes in athletics at the Evelio Javier Memorial Sports Complex; one gold, one silver and one bronze in badminton at the St. Anthony’s College.

Four gold medals, three silvers and one bronze came from chess at the DepEd Rooftop; and 12 golds, five silvers and three bronzes in karatedo, which was held at the Antique National School Covered court.

The Cebuanos also won 27 gold medals with 15 silvers and 11 bronze medals; the jins had an 8-4-1 gold-silver-bronze medal haul in taekwondo, while the weightlift­ers had an 11-9-6 medal haul.

Chess player KC Morala bagged two gold medals for Team Cebu City as she topped the Asean Women’s and Rapid competitio­n while bagging silver medals in the blitz event and standard competitio­n and a bronze in the 960 event.

Jeffu Dorog also contribute­d a gold medal in the blitz competitio­n, while Jo- nas Dustin Bajo won the gold in the Rapid competitio­n.

Lapu-Lapu City also had its share of the medal haul in chess with Henry Michael Infante bagging the gold and Aldwin Daculan finishing with a bronze medal in the standard competitio­n. Anthony Paran took the bronze medal in the 960 and Asean Men’s event and Romeo Resuera won the silver medal in the Rapid tournament.

As of press time, Muay Thai, pencak silat and boxing finals were still being staged. RCM
