Magsayo faces Montoya in Pinoy Pride

-

MARK Magsayo looks to extend his unbeaten streak when he takes on Mexican up-and-comer Eduardo Montoya in Pinoy Pride 35 - “Stars of the Future” at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino on Feb. 27.

Coming off one of the biggest wins of his career, the 20-year-old Magsayo is right back into the spotlight as he’ll be co-featured with fellow undefeated prospects Albert Pagara and Kevin Jake Cataraja in a boxing show that showcases the possible future boxing stars of the Philippines.

“It’s important for Mark because if he does well, he’ll be fighting bigger fights in the future,” ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer told Sun. Star Cebu.

Magsayo is fresh from his US debut in October. He handily destroyed Mexican up-and-comer Yardley Suarez in just a single round at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

“We think he is the future of Philippine boxing, so every fight means a lot to his career as he goes up the ladder. With Manny (Pacquiao), Donnie (Nietes) and Nonito (Donaire) not getting any younger, we are looking at younger fighters to carry the torch of Philippine boxing and we think Mark and Albert could be it,” said Aldeguer.

The 22-year-old Montoya, the younger brother of Rosbel Montoya, is a Mexican champion with a 17-4-1 slate with 13 knockouts. He is currently on a three-bout winning streak. He owns a win over Marco Antonio Barrera’s cousin, Alejandro Barrera, whom he knocked out in four rounds.

Magsayao, 12-0 with 10 knockouts, has two other dates reserved for him after this fight. He’s scheduled to see action in Manila in April and in the US in June.

Undefeated Albert Pagara (25-0, 18 KOs) faces off with former world champion Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. (20-4-1, 9 KOs) in the main event.
