Santiago now feeling better, says her office

-

SENATOR Miriam Defensor Santiago is getting well and will soon be transferred to a private room, a statement from her office said.

“Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is feeling better now. She is scheduled to return from ICU to a private room,” the statement read.

“Further updates will be announced by her office soon. Thank you,” it added.

On Wednesday, Santiago's husband Narciso Santiago confirmed that the 70-year-old senator was rushed by ambulance to the hospital on Monday as she suffered complications from stage 4 lung cancer.

Her husband, however, said she is “bearing well with her trademark sense of humor.”

He said visitors are not allowed and that gifts such as flowers and other blooms will not be accepted.

In a statement sent on Wednesday, Mr. Santiago thanked “all her family, friends, supporters, fans, and others who helped pray for her recovery and sent their well-wishes on Facebook.”

On July 2, 2014, Santiago announced that she has lung cancer. But just last year, she said her cancer cells had regressed and that she will participate in the 2016 presidential race.

Hardly seen in campaign sorties, Santiago lost to now President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.

The senator, whose terms ends on June 30, sent a letter on May 24 to Senate President Franklin Drilon, informing him that she would continue on her medical leave as she had also suffered from anorexia or inability to eat due to her medications. (Sunnex)
