8 awards for local actors

-

As an ardent supporter of the local movie industry, it gives me such pride to know that local actors are making waves in various international film festivals in different parts of the world.

At least eight awards had been collected by local actors and it’s not even the second half of the year yet. The “harvest,” so to say, is led by Jacklyn Jose winning the best actress award for the Brillante Mendoza movie Ma’ Rosa at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival in France. She bested strong contenders such as Julianne Moore and Rooney Mara.

Other awardees are Jake Cuenca (best actor at the World Cinema Festival in Brazil), Sid Lucero (best actor, Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival), Allen Dizon (best actor, 4th Silk Road Film Festival in Dublin, Ireland for the movie Iadya Mo Kami), Aiko Melendez (best actress, International Film Festival in Manhattan), LJ Reyes (best actress, Oporto International Film Festial in Russia for Shadow Behind The Moon), Eugene Domingo (best actress, Tokyo International Film Festival in Japan for Barber’s Tales) and Barbie Forteza (best actress, 36th Fantasporto International Film Festival in Portugal for Laut).

Whew! What a feat!

*** Finally, the rainy season has arrived. Not only will the vegetation around us manifest a visible change in color and appearance, but also the people’s choice of clothing, looks and lifestyle.

With the coming of the “marry month of June,” we might be able to see these changes among the members of the couple’s entourage before, during and after the ceremonies.

Hair and beauty expert Jun Esma says that the “in” look for hairstyles is still the so-called creative cut. He said though that at this time, the creative haircut gets out of the box and swings to the extreme side with outrageous designs.

Trending colors for the young and the not-so-young but expressive and creative individuals are gray, golden blonde and ash. I’m personally excited to try one or a combination of these colors. Wanna try too?

*** I was able to watch Just The 3 of Us two days before the change in programming. The movie had heavy dramatic scenes involving not only its lead stars Jennylyn Mercado and John Lloyd Cruz but the supporting cast.

One such scene was with Lloydie and Richard Yap, who played the former’s father. Truth to tell, father-andson scenes easily move me and even reduce me to tears at times, just like this one. Whew!

*** The next offering from Star Cinema is Achy Breaky Heart with Ian Veneracion, Judy Sta. Maria and Richard Yap as lead stars. This will open on June 29.

According to promo diva Josie Pereyra, the company had, as usual, scheduled a press conference and mall tour for the stars in Cebu on June 27. More of this in succeeding issues.

*** Former ABS-CBN top brass and now content consultant Charo Santos is back into acting. She plays the title role in Ang Babaeng Humayo with Lav Diaz at the helm.

The release of the movie is still tentative with considerations of entering local film festivals including the year-end Metro Manila Film Festivals.

The mention of Lav Diaz being the director gives a hint that the movie may be a long one just like his latest film Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis, which required eight hours of viewing time, one that I proudly survived.

*** On a personal note, let me welcome Jonathan Phelps to the country and to Cebu. He’s the second son of Ely Dickinson of Sitio Bachao, Catmondaan, Catmon.

John was based in the US of A and was not able to visit the country for the last 20 years or so. With John are his wife and first born son. Have a memorable vacation, folks!

*** GMA 7 brings back Encantadia, the top-rating teleseries in 2006 but with a new cast (and presumably new twists and look) this time. Playing major characters in the series are Glaiza de Castro, Kylie Padilla, Gabbi Garcia, Rochelle Pangilinan and Sanya Lopez.

Also playing colorful characters are Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, Ruru Madrid, Rocco Nacino, Pancho Magno, Mikee Quintos, Migo Adacer, Solenn Heussaff, Kler Pineda, Enzo Pineda, Christian Bautista and many more.
