CDU hopes to attract 3,000 runners in 11th University Run, invites other Cesafi members

TO enjoy the sport of running and to help the community are the motivations of the Run For Sight Foundation for the annual University Run, which will have its 11th edition on Aug. 28 at the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) campus in Mandaue City.

The University Run is one of the longest-running fun runs in Cebu and is known for the three-bridge challenge with runners traversing the first Mandaue-Mactan Bridge, Marcelo Fernan Bridge and Cansaga Bridge.

“(What motivates us) mainly is that the event is made by runners for runners. And also it’s for the benefit for the medical mission of Run For Sight. The motivation is to enjoy the run and help others,” Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III, the run organizer and chairman of Run For Sight, said in a press conference yesterday.

The 11th year of the University Run will have the men’s and women’s 25-kilometer, 13K, 6K and 3K categories.

Larrazabal said that this year they invited other universities through the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi).

“The event has long been open to all schools but this year we officially invited them through the Cesafi,” he said.

Larrazabal said that every year, they prepare around 3,500 to 4,000 slots for the race. This year they are hopeful to get the target despite the low number of enrollees in first year college because of the K-12 program.

Dr. Philip Larrazabal, Run for Sight board member, said that the Grade 11 students of CDUH are also invited to the run.

Also present during the press conference were Cathy Vestil, from the PE Department of Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital (CDUH), Arnold Choachuy of Sunsports, Joel Juarez, race di- rector, and Stanley Clark Divay, CDUH Sappro.

Organizers said that the route of all the categories is the same as that of last year. The 25K and 13K winners will also receive cash prizes, while the 13K and 25K finishers will get a medal.

The registration is now open with the early bird discount for the 25K and 13K categories at P700 and P600. Early bird registration is until Aug. 1. Regular registration fee is at P800 for the 25K and P700 for the 13K, P400 for 6K and P300 for the 3K.

Registration areas are at Run For Sight headquarters at the CDUH, Sappro office at Cebu Doctors’ University in North Reclamation, Mandaue City and online registration at www.runforsight.net.
