PH to host Miss U in 2017
THE Philippines will host the Miss Universe pageant in January 2017 under the auspices of private sponsors.
This was announced yesterday by Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo in a press conference held in Makati City.
The pageant, only six months away, will cost $11 million to set up but will not cost the Philippine Government, Teo said.
She said she has assured President Rodrigo Duterte that the funds will be privately sourced.
WAmong the sponsors are Japanese billionaire and Tiger Resort chief Kazuo Okada and Henry Sy, owner of the SM chain of malls.
Duterte met with officials of Tiger Resort Leisure and Entertainment Inc.-Okada, executive assistant to the chairman Sumire Kamura, and chief operating officer Takahiro Usui--at the Music Room in Malacañang Palace last July 18.

Personal vehicles
CCPO Director Joel Doria said he has been using a vehicle from the Mobile Patrol Group since he assumed office.
“When I arrived in the office, I let them return the City-issued vehicle because there was a recall order,” Doria said in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, referring to the Toyota Fortuner assigned to Santos. were not disclosed.
The Philippines first hosted Miss Universe in 1974 and again in 1994.
The country has produced three Miss Universe-Gloria Diaz in 1969, Margarita Moran in 1973 and Pia Wurtzbach in 2015. From Rappler
Doria said it doesn’t matter why type of vehicle he is using now.
“Serbisyo po tayo kahit anong type ng sasakyan (We’ll render our service whatever the type of vehicle we’re using),” he said.
He recently visited the police stations of Guadalupe, Labangon, Mambaling, Pardo, San Nicholas, Carbon and Waterfront.
Ricabo, for his part, said he will also use his personal vehicle to perform his duties.
