Mactan blaze displaces 14 families

NINE houses were destroyed after fire broke out in Barangay Mactan, LapuLapu City yesterday dawn.

Some 14 families were displaced by the incident.

In the initial report of the Lapu-Lapu Fire Central District, the fire started in the house of Fernando Cabilen Sr. in Sitio Dapdap around 1:30 a.m.

Firefighte­rs arrived at 1:33 a.m. and had the fire under control in three minutes.

Fernando and his wife Catalina suffered burns on their arms and were treated by members of the Philippine Red Cross, who arrived at the scene.

The flames were finally put out at 3 a.m.

Damage was estimated at around P80,000.

Mactan Barangay Captain Evaristo Dihayco Jr. said the barangay provided them with two tents after they decided to stay in the fire site instead of going to the barangay gym.

Assistance

Barangay officials and personnel pooled their money to buy instant noodles, canned goods and rice for the survirors.

Neighbors also donated used clothing.

Barangay health workers will visit the fire site to check on the fire survivors.

Last Aug. 1, six houses were also destroyed on A.S. Fortuna St. in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City.

No one was hurt during the fire in Sitio Sampaguita. Damage was estimated at P350,000.
