In the limelight
A simple dinner affair with friends and "co-workers in the vineyard" marked the 40th Sacerdotal anniversary of Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma. The gathering was held at the Archibishop's Palace with His Eminence Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal leading the wellwishers. The Cebu CFI Community Cooperative honored its founder, the late Judge
Esperanza Garcia, on her birthday, with the unveiling of a bronze bust at the lobby of the Esperanza Fiel-Garcia Bldg., its headquarters at the Capitol Compound. Proudly in attendance were the cooperative's chairman of the board and the honoree's husband, former Deputy Speaker of Congress Pablo P. Garcia, and their eight children: Rep. Gwen of the 3rd district; Dierdra G. Vachal who jetted in from New Jersey; lawyer Winston;
Nelson; Byron; Barili Mayor Marlon; Farla; and Pablo John. The 888 News Forum marked 10 years of existence with a mid-morning activity at the Marco Polo Plaza. Frontliners were Latvia Consul Bobby Joseph who started the forum a decade ago, and Marco Polo resident manager Xavier Masson who played gracious host. Also around was forum mainstay Elias Baquero of Sun.Star minus his partner Ricky Poca who was indisposed. *** It was a two-in-one celebration for Justice Vicente Lumapas Yap when he turned all of 80 years old and had the book launch of his autobiography. Venue was the Porveda Farm at the Eugenio Yap Estate in Bogo City. The program hosted by Justice Remedios Salazar Fernando began with an invocation by Rev. Fr. Rolando Angel Torres followed by the welcome address of Bogo Councilor Belinda Rodriguez. Doing the honors of formally introducing book author Justice Vicente Yap was Atty. Cecilia Go. He then unveiled his book and talked about its theme. Very much part of the program were the fond recollections/ tributes from friends:
Vicente Tan Jr., Brig. Gen. Benito Diamos, Justice Isaias Dicdican, Judge Antonio Marigomen and Rev. Fr. Patricio
Ornopia. A sumptuous birthday feast highlighted the celebration. ***
Michael Giovan Sarthou III was once upon a time one of our writers for the original Sun.Star Weekend. I never imagined then that he was actually a cook at heart until he surfaced in Manila as the celebrated Chef Tatung. His cooking expertise was honed when he helped in the kitchen of his grandmothers here in Cebu but he has gone further by doing research on indigenous cooking methods and tweaking traditional recipes.
It was therefore no surprise when he came up with a book Philippine Cook
ery: From Heart to Platter. The book is very interesting reading because aside from favorite and very doable recipes, it features heartwarming anecdotes and kitchen stories.
We met Chef Tatung over lunch at Pino a few weeks back when he came to promote his book (available at National Bookstore). Our group was celebrating the birthday of CDN's Jaime Picornell with Mr. Pino Joel del Prado playing host.
