VOTER registration for the 2017 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls will resume on Nov. 7, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said yesterday.

In his Twitter account, @ ChairAndyBau, Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista posted a photo of Resolution No. 10166, approved by the commission en banc on Monday.

The registration period will be from Nov. 7, 2016 to April 29, 2017, including Saturdays and holidays, except on Dec. 24 and 25, 2016 (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) and April 13 and 14, 2017 (Maundy Thursday and Good Friday).

Postponement

Earlier, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said that the poll body will issue an order for the reopening of voter registration after President Rodrigo Duterte signed the law officially moving the Oct. 31 village and youth elections to next year.

The poll body is expected to register a total of five million people, two million additional voters for the SK election and three million individuals for the barangay election.

The conduct of another round of voter registration is required by R.A. 8189 or the Voters’ Registration Act of 1996.

Last Oct. 18, Duterte signed the law postponing the barangay and SK elections from Oct. 31, 2016 to Oct. 23, 2017.
