Laughable, pathetic

- GINGGING AVELLANOSA-VALLE

ABSURD! Ludicrous! Ridiculous! Nothing can be more laughable and pathetic than seeing the furtive manner the “body” of the dictator was hastily buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB), as if doing so would change the glaring truth that the Marcoses are marked for generations to come.

Because no matter if former dictator Ferdinand Marcos is buried in a tomb reserved for so-called heroes, the greater majority of Filipinos know better, that he was nothing but a traitor who was devoid of dignity even in death.

I pity the young and innocent Marcoses who may be subject of flak just because they carry the family name.

They too are becoming victims of the misdeeds of their elders who could not set right what was basically done wrong, and will suffer the curse as well, even if they have not done anything bad against anybody.

They may have been blinded already by their elders surrounding them and whose bigoted loyalty for the dictator persisted, unmindful of the suffering that the despotic dictator have caused the Filipinos for years up to the present time.

While some Filipinos have short memories of that dark period in our country’s history, there’s no denying that not a few thousand Filipinos continue to yearn for justice for their loved ones who were tortured and killed during martial law, when the wanton abuse of power by the Armed Forces under Marcos was the order of the day.

In those dreadful years, I too had many friends who agonized and died in the hands of the once feared Philippine Constabulary (PC) and the Citizen’s Home Defense Forces (CHDF), units whose allegiance to the dictator had turned their members into monsters rampaging with their daily killing spree.

They spared no one, not even the innocents, just to please their evil master. Perhaps, the Marcoses and even their loyal followers had a different reality then. Those who gained from the plunder and conveniently turned their heads away when masses upon masses marched the streets in protest, and were met with instant reprisal.

But for how long can they continue insisting on their twisted “truth”? Time and again history has proven that the “hakot” can only go as far. Ilocandia may be blind for a time, but the rest of the country is wide awake and aware of what the Marcoses are trying hard to do.

The truth shall always prevail. And even as we condemn this age-old malady, the Indigenous Peoples continue to suffer the scourge of inequity in our society. Very recently, students and teachers of the Center for Lumad Advocacy and Services in Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat are reportedly being gripped by terror as elements of the state threatened, harassed and intimidated them in the course of their military operations.

Why are these people doing these things against the IPs? Clearly these government entities do not want peace to prevail. Calling on our President to please take heed.-- from Sun.Star Davao
