IF IT changes course, typhoon Nina will likely hit northern or central Cebu tomorrow night or on Sunday, Christmas day.

At 4 p.m. yesterday, typhoon Nina was spotted 1,320 kilometers east of northern Mindanao but still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), blowing with maximum winds and gustiness of 75 to 95 kilometers per hour (kph).

Al Quiblat, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Scientific Administration (Pagasa) Mactan, said typhoon Nina was expected to enter PAR last night.

Quiblat said that in Pagasa’s main forecast track, typhoon Nina will make landfall in the Bicol Region-Samar area tomorrow night or Sunday morning, and is expected to exit PAR either on Dec. 26 or Dec. 27.

If this is maintained, the typhoon will not affect Cebu.

“It is still possible that it will change direction towards northern or central Cebu based on historical data but the chance is low. The current category of tropical storm may intensify before landfall to severe tropical storm or typhoon,” Quiblat said.

He said there will be moderate to heavy rains at 30 millimeters per hour that may cause flashfloods, landslides and storm surge in areas along the path of typhoon Nina.
