Gao rules Alta Vista golf

PHL team mainstay WeiWei Gao wins AVGCC golf tournament

NATIONAL golf team member Weiwei Gao shot six-underpar 66 to rule the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club (AVGCC) Fun Golf event at the par-72 course of AVGCC in Pardo, Cebu City last Dec. 10 to 11. The 16-year-old Gao, who’s off to University of Virginia in the United States next year, snagged the tournament’s lowest gross honors after a stellar performanc­e which was highlighte­d by an eagle on the par-5 hole No. 18. Gao also fired birdies on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 16th and 17th holes. The only blemish on his scorecard were bogeys on holes No. 5 and No.15. The lowest net plum, on the other hand, went to Anwar Abarintos, who played with a handicap of 25. Abarintos fired a gross 82, and with his handicap he managed to get a net 57 to win the low net honors.

Peter Rennie won the Class A title with a Net 66, beating Clifford Gaite who scored 67. The second runner-up plum went to Archie Villa, who scored 68, after winning via countback over Alex Yeo and Baltaire Balangauan.

Nester Mendoza topped Class B with 64 winning in the countback to settle a three-way tie. Jude Demiar settled for first-runner up, while Richard Tan took second runner-up honors.

Kenneth Carredo reigned in the Class C with 63. Lor Alburo finished with 64 for first runner-up, while Steve Alcoseba was second runner-up with 66.

Ramon Sebastian, the treasurer and golf chairman of AVGCC, dominated the seniors’ division with par-72 strokes to win the lowest gross for the class.

Antonio “Loloy” Sabuga shot 65 to win the lowest net award in the seniors division. Roy Damole was second with 67, while Yasunori Hara was third with 69 after beating Willy Tupaz in the countback.

Retired Appellate Court Justice Pampio Abarintos ruled the super seniors division with a net score of 59. Runner-up honors went to Ed Sy with 63.

In the ladies division, Weifang Gao scored 66 to win the title over Rachel “Che-che” Darnall who had 70.

In the guest division, Tyrone Tan won the top honors with 61. Ramon “Boboy” Durano IV nabbed first runner-up with 65 and Army Col. Gerry Catindoy was the second runner up with 68, beating Fr. Bob Ebisa in the countback.
