Stench from garbage trucks worries residents

-

Residents of Barangay Poblacion 3, Carcar City are complaining about the foul smell coming from the wastes transported by garbage trucks to a sanitary landfill in neighboring Aloguinsan town.

The barangay tried to stop the vehicles from passing their village at night only to find the trucks transporting the trash during the day, said Poblacion 3 Barangay Captain Wilfredo Sabala.

Sabala said their residents started complaining about the foul odor earlier this month.

He lamented that the stench coming from the passing trucks is causing discomfort to his constituents.

“Some of the residents are al- ready complaining that their children are getting ill because of the foul smell,” Sabala said.

To address the matter, Sabala met with the officials of Carcar City Environment and Natural Resources Office early this week.

They then conducted an operation in their village last Thursday night, which resulted to the apprehension of eight garbage trucks.

Upon inspection, Sabala said they noticed leachates seeping through the vehicles.

The village chief asked one of the truck drivers who employed them but he refused to answer.

The unidentified driver, how- ever, committed to Sabala that they will no longer pass by the area at night.

The village chief welcomed the driver’s statement and released the trucks.

Sabala, however, was irked after seeing the garbage trucks passing by their area during daytime.

Officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 plan to visit the area to check on the barangay’s complaint.

Environmental Management Bureau 7 director William Cuñado also said they plan to send inspectors in the area on Tuesday.
