LAWIG 100: AN EXHIBIT BY UP CEBU
The main difference between change and growth is that the former is inevitable. For the University of the Philippines-Cebu, growth is a constant choice which has to be made.
Although change comes within its bounds without prior notice, the university ensures that with change comes growth, opening its doors to so much more.
Last May 7, UP-Cebu launched Lawig 100: Siglo sa Pag-alagad Pinaagi sa Alampat ug Pamayhag and had an exhibit at Robinsons Galleria. Together with this, the university also announced the reinvention of its Arts and Humanities Cluster now called College of Communication, Art and Design (CCAD) which offers three baccalaureate programs in arts: Mass Communication, Studio Arts and Product Design. In addition, lawyer Vincent Ian Manticajon, program coordinator for the Mass Communication program, announced that with the rebranding of the Arts and Humanities Cluster to CCAD, the current Mass Communication curriculum will be revised changing it to Bachelor of Arts in Communication in 2018.
Lawig 100 was an exhibit of artworks of different media and genres which are the creations of its students from the Fine Arts and Mass Communications Program of UP-Cebu.
The exhibit featured creations made possible with UP Cebu’s Fablab, the first makerspace in Cebu but second in the Visayas that bridges invention to creation due to accessible tools for digital fabrication and rapid prototyping. All these features are not only for the students but also available to the public as well for varying rates.
UP-Cebu’s Fablab currently features laser cutting. This enables one to cut intricate designs through wood, paper and acrylic using high-power CO2 laser. It also features 3-D printing, for the materialization of 3-D models for custom design accessories, inventions, toys etc.; large format printing, for the printing of photos, stickers and other branding needs with no minimum order required in Fablab UP-Cebu; Desktop CNC, which enables one to create his own PCBs or engrave company logos using subtractive milling technology; large CNC, for cutting large parts of wood from a single board to create replicable pieces of furniture; vinyl cutting, for creating decals, signages and branding stickers for projects and workspaces and prototyping consultations.
Fablab UP Cebu is a venture between the Department of Trade and IndustryCebu and University of the Philippines Cebu’s Product Design program. The Fablab was created alongside a Negosyo Center ( governmentfunded business incubator) and its co-working space.
The Fablab aims to equip makers, design students, professionals, medium, small and micro enterprises, and the public with democratic access to advanced prototyping, printing and related equipment, as well as training and workshop facilities.
