More coal power for Mindanao grid

A total of 450 megawatts (MW) coming from coalfired power plants are expected to power the Mindanao grid this year, according to the April 2017 data of the Department of Energy on committed power projects in Mindanao.

Power plants that have targeted to start commercial operations this year are the 150MW SMC Davao Power Plant Project 2 of the San Miguel Consolidat­ed Power Corp. in Davao Occidental, the 135 MW FDC-Misamis Circulatin­g Fluidized Bed coal-fired power plant project unit 3 of FDC Utilities Inc. in Misamis Occidental, and the 165 MW Balingasag Thermal Circulatin­g Fluidized Bed Combustion coal-fired power plant of the Minergy Corp. in Misamis Oriental.

The Mindanao grid can also expect an additional 640 MW from coal-fired power plants in 2018. This will be coming from the 540MW GN Power Kauswagan Clean Coal-Fired Power Plant of the GN Power Kauswagan Ltd. Co. in Lanao del Norte and the 100MW Southern Mindanao Coal Fired Power Station of the Sarangani Energy Corp. in Sarangani.

Meanwhile, 96.2 MW of renewable energy (RE) from hydroelect­ric power plants are expected to power the Mindanao grid this year.

These are the 2.4MW New Bataan HEPP of Euro Hydro Power (Asia) Holdings Inc. in Compostela Valley, 43.4 MW Manolo Fortich I of Hedcor Bukidnon, Inc. in Bukidnon, 25.4 MW Manolo Fortich 2 Compostela Valley, and the 25MW Lake Mainit HEPP of Agusan Power Corp. in Agusan del Norte. /
