■ SUBANGDAKU FIRE SURVIVORS NEED CLOTHING, SCHOOL SUPPLIES, UTENSILS

- AISHA MURAD, MUS INTERN

As fire survivors in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City were forced to leave their temporary relocation site, they appealed to the public for help with their basic needs, including school supplies for the children, kitchen utensils and clothes. Some families also need supplies to resume their livelihood, such as weighing scales and pails for those who sell fish in the neighborhood. The 155 families who lost their homes in the fire last June 12 had to leave the Subangdaku Elementary School since classes have already resumed. They were transferred to the Subangdaku Botanical Garden, while the other victims opted to go back to the fire site. Mayor Luigi Quisumbing said that when they reblock the fire site, the City will build a firewall after every 10 houses to prevent fire from spreading.

As classes resumed, survivors of last Monday’s fire in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City were transferred from Subangdaku Elementary School to the barangay’s botanical garden.

Mayor Luigi Quisumbing yesterday visited the fire victims together with the Department of Social Welfare and Develop- ment 7 and Subangdaku Barangay Captain Ernie Manatad and extended aid.

They distributed food and provided mats and blankets.

One of the beneficiaries was Joel Ucon, who welcomed the help extended by the City Government and the barangay.

Ucon, a fireman, was one of those who prevented the fire from spreading to other houses.

Vincent Nino Adlawan, a fire volunteer, asked that they be given financial help, saying that all their belongings, including the school uniforms of his children, were destroyed during the fire.

Quisumbing said that the fire victims will be allowed to go back to the fire site but added that the City will construct a firewall after every 10 houses to prevent another fire incident.

The owner of the private property said they won’t prevent the fire victims from rebuilding their homes. /
