A BAKER'S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

- Cassandra C. Poculan/Writer Jonolin M. Luab/Fotos

Since its inception in 1981, Julie’s Bakeshop has always been founded on integrity, trust, and excellence. For almost four decades now, it has remained true to its mission of feeding people through its many innovations and best practices to ensure the highest quality of its products. Another core value that Julie’s stands for is teamwork, and today we take a look into the life of one of the important men on its team.

Manolo Closas Parba, 47, is a Research and Development technician who has been with Julie’s since 1989. He was only 19 then with no prior experience at all in baking. He rose through the ranks, starting with just weighing flour and making donuts to scaling ingredients and training other bakers. Then he was sent on travel assignments to open other branches in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

As a Research and Development technician, he helps in creating new products, checks the recipes to make sure they’re consistent and that the measurements are correct. Manolo says that benefits and compensation aside, he likes the working environment at Julie’s. “It is very easy to adapt to and they’re employee-oriented. Whenever you have a problem, you can always count on them to fix it.”

When he’s not in the kitchen donning his apron and skillfully pummeling dough, Manolo spends quality time with his family. A father of three, he admits to being a disciplinarian who’s lenient and strict in equal measure. “My number one rule is that education should come first,” he adds. Some of their bonding activities include going on beach trips, singing karaoke, and cooking.

From the cracking of an egg and the sifting of flour to the kneading of the dough, Manolo does things with both confidence and instinct— qualities that the bakeshop’s founder has molded the company with from the get-go. Now with over 400 branches nationwide, it’s no surprise why Julie’s has become the preferred neighborhood bakeshop chain in the country. The distinct taste of its breads and pastries has earned Julie’s Bakeshop a steady stream of patrons. Here are two new products to entice them more:
