Jon Jones is back on top

- JINGO QUIJANO jingo_quijano@yahoo.com

You couldn’t have asked for a better rematch script if you were Jon “Bones” Jones.

Pilloried for having a “dark” side and consistently portrayed by detractors as the bad guy, Jones not only proved his superiority over Daniel Cormier, in the process he acquitted himself well by exhibiting admitable sportsmanship and magnanimity in victory.

THE FIGHT.

DC had a very good first round against his rival as he chose to vary his offensive approach.

Instead of tirelessly going for the takedown as he did in their first fight, DC stood with Jones and decided to strike with his taller rival.

Jones landed several leg kicks, speared DC with jabs and was able to maintain some distance.

But when DC was within range he was able to connect with some eye-popping right hands and uppercuts.

In the second, Jones lands several more leg kicks but an inadvertent headbutt momentarily halts the action. Cormier however continues to come forward, landing and taking return artillery.

Both men end up in the ground momentarily as DC tries a takedown but is reversed. As the round ends, DC lands a strong right hand.

DC gets off to a good start in the third, taking the knees to the body well and landing short right hands and a huge left hook in return.

Suddenly as Cormier comes forward, Jones unleashes a kick that lands hard on DC’s temple.

In a split second, the complexion of the fight turns for the worse for DC as he staggers, retreats and eventually falls to the ground.

Jones follows up wirh several strikes on a hapless and helpless DC and the referee calls for the denouement of the match.

BONES.

With the stoppage win, Jones has redeemed not only his career but also his reputation. In the post-fight interview, he heaped praises on Cormier despite all the bad blood coming in to the fight and unselfishly thanked supporters and critics alike.

Then he got the fans excited when he called out Brock Lesnar for a potential super-fight.

As for DC, he broke down after the loss and seemed inconsolable.

What made the scene uncomfortable was UFC commentator Joe Rogan going against his policy of not interviewing fighters who have just been knocked out.

DC looked lost during the brief interview but did utter the most meaningful statement of the night when he admitted that if he didn’t win any of their fights there wasn’t much of a rivalry.

VERBATIM.

“Jon got hit with some big punches from Daniel. I know if I had hit him with some of those punches he most likely would have went down.”- Anthony “Rumble” Johnson

LAST ROUND.

It’s on my cousin Buddy Tiu who recently celebrated his birthday. Cheers!
