■ SEX FOR GOOD GRADES? CEBU CITY TEACHER FACES CRIMINAL COMPLAINT OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Police filed a sexual harassment complaint this week against a 24-year-old instructor in a private university, after a 21-year-old working student accused him of molesting her last Monday while inside the university’s science lab. Chief Insp. Maria Theresa Macatangay, who heads the Abellana Police Station, urged other victims of the teacher, if there are any, to press charges. “These people do not deserve to be in our educational system,” she said. The student had told the police that the harassment becan last June, and that the instructor had offered to give her good grades in exchange for sexual favors.
A college teacher was charged yesterday for allegedly molesting a 21-year-old working student inside a private university last Monday afternoon.
Chief Insp. Maria Theresa Macatangay, the Abellana Police Station commander, said they filed a complaint of sexual harassment against the 24-yearold instructor before the city prosecutor’s office.
She urged other victims of the teacher to come out and file complaints.
“These kind of people do not deserve to be in our educational system. Parents entrusted their children to these teachers, lo and behold, kining mga maestroha o maestraha... ingon ani diay sila (these teachers... how can they be like that),” Macatangay said.
The police official did not divulge the teacher’s name to protect the victim’s identity.
The complainant, Diane (real name withheld), was in the science laboratory when the incident happened last Monday. The teacher went inside the room and molested her.
Diane went home and reported the incident to her parents. Last Tuesday, they told the university’s officials about it and the latter ordered their security to place the teacher under arrest.
Investigation by the Women and Children’s Protection Desk showed that the suspect started to harass Diane last June. The teacher offered to give her good grades for sexual favors, but Diane refused his advances on her. /
