A rosary rally organized by Cebu’s lay communities to oppose extrajudicial killings, the legalization of divorce and war attracted more than 200 people.

The rally, held at the Pilgrim Center of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño, called for solidarity among Catholics, especially with the issues affecting the country now.

Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer, one of Cebu’s lay leaders and a prolife advocate, called on Catholics to pray for the National Government to be enlightened and to review their policies in the war against illegal drugs, which has led to thousands of deaths.

Bullecer made the call just after President Rodrigo Duterte asked the Philippine National Police to arrest policemen involved in the death of 17-year-old Kian delos Santos. De los Santos, a senior high school student, was killed after he allegedly fought policemen outside his parents’ store in Caloocan City last week.

“Dili na ni maayo ang nahitabo sa nasod nga senseless killing, Filipinos killing Filipinos, which we consider unchristian and very inhuman,” Bullecer said.

But Bullecer said they have no problem with Duterte’s war against drugs. It’s more the killing of numerous drug personalities without due process that they are opposing.

The rosary rally also called upon Catholics in Cebu to oppose House Bill 6027, the proposed law to legalize the dissolution of marriages.

During the rally, Bullecer named all of the lawmakers, including Cebu Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia (Cebu, 3rd), who co-authored HB 6027, with the crowd chanting “Ginoo, ayaw ni sila.”
