CERC takes over Run Rio to once more lead organizing for Cebu Marathon 2018, promises a better edition

After shifting to a different route last January, the Cebu Marathon will return to some old favorites, for starters using the South Road Properties (SRP) for its 11th edition slated on Jan. 14, 2018.

The 2018 Cebu Marathon will start and finish at the Cebu Business Park and is projected to gather 5,000 runners in four categories— the 42-kilometer, 21K, 10K and 5K.

The Cebu Executive Runners Club (CERC), which started the running event last 2008, will also be back in charge and replacing Runrio Inc., a Manila-based team that handled the run for the past four years.

“We will be back to using the SRP and the SRP Tunnel for 2018 Cebu Marathon,” said CERC president Kenneth Casquejo during the event’s official launch at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel yesterday.

The Cebu Marathon used another route, covering the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu, for the first time on its 10th edition last January.

will be back to covering the roads of Cebu and Talisay City.

With the return of the all-Cebuano organizing team, the hope is that the prestigious race will return to its glory days.

“One of the comments we received from last January was about the loot bags. We addressed that concern and for next year, everything in the loot bag will cost as much or even more than the registration fees that the runners paid for,” said John Pages.

“Food (after the race) was also one issues that the participants raised. For sure, next year, we will have more compared than last January,” added Pages.

Casquejo said that Cebuano hospitality will be highlighted during the race, which still falls within the Sinulog week.

Visitors from various parts of the country and international runners come to Cebu for the race, making it one of the most well-attended sports tourism events in Cebu.

“Sporting events like these encourage tourism, and it has helped promote Cebu. The Cebu City Government is here to extend its full support to one of the prestigious races in Cebu,” said Cebu City Councilor Jerry Guardo, who’s also the deputy mayor for sports.

“Cebu Province is also supporting this event and we’re glad to be tapped as part of this race. We are discussing at Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) the support that we will give to the race,” said CPSC executive director and lawyer Ramil Abing.

The registration for the 2018 Cebu Marathon is now in full swing after the registration for 10K and 5K opened yesterday.

Registration fee for the 42K is at P1,800; for 21K, it will be P1,400; for the 10K, P950; and for 5K, P750.

Registration is ongoing at New Balance Experience Store at Ayala Center Cebu, and online at www.race.ph. The runners from Luzon can also register at New Balance Bonifacio High Street BGC Taguig, Trinoma and Alabang Town Center.
