JINGO QUIJANO Loma takes on Rigo

- jingo_quijano@yahoo.com

There’s a fight this coming December 9 that has hardcore boxing fans salivating. To the casual fan, Guillermo Rigondeaux and Vasyl Lomachenko are not household names.

But if you are interested in the finer points of the sweet science, this is a fight you should not miss.

It’s definitely not going to be a caveman -type slugfest, but it will be a clash of skilled technicians, where the primary goal is to hit and evade return fire.

I’ll understand if it’s not your cup of tea.. but this fight is a compelling and intriguing matchup that qualifies as a superfight between pound-for-pound champions.

RIGO. The WBA super bantamweight champion is no fan favorite thanks to his style of fighting.

He puts premium in defense so much that he has been labeled as boring.

And I will freely admit that I would much rather go through an entire episode of one of those korean telenovelas the wifey adores so much than let Rigo lull

When the fight gets into close quarters, Loma will have the advantage, plus the heavier blows will ultimately take its toll on the older Cuban.

me to sleep.

His last fight ended controversially as Rigo appeared to land a punch after the bell rang in the first round that knocked his opponent Moises Flores out. It was later ruled as a no-contest.

His roster of victims includeJoseph Agbeko and Pinoy fighters Nonito Donaire and Drian Francisco.

LOMA. The current WBO super featherweight champion is also a defensive specialist like Rigo but most fans appreciate the way he fights.

Unlike Rigo, he’s a busy puncher and throws a lot of counters after making opponents miss.

In his last fight, he outclassed Miguel Marriaga inside 7 rounds and did some showboating which turned off some fans.

His most impressive victories came against Marriaga and Nicholas Walters.

MATCHUP. For this fight, Rigondeaux (17-0, 11 KOs) will be moving up to challenge Lomachenko (9-1, 7 KOs).

They both match-up well against each other and this will be a chess match played with gloves.

I’m predicting Loma to come on top via close unanimous decision. When defensive specialists collide, we can expect a tactical, cerebral contest and this is where Loma’s busier workrate and ouput will sway the judges.

Another crucial factor will be punching power. Neither of them have one punch knockout power but Loma is the heavier handed fighter.

When the fight gets into close quarters Loma will have the advantage, plus the heavier blows will ultimately take its toll on the older Cuban.

VERBATIM. “I’ll knock him out in front of everybody. It’s not even difficult to knock him out. You don’t even have to hit him hard. He’s looking for the first window to jump out of” - Paulie Malignaggi on fighting Conor Mcgregor (http://www. boxingscene.com) LAST ROUND. It’s on my kumpare Clifford Gaite who celebrates his birthday this week. Cheers!
