SPARTAN RACE TO HIT CEBU IN 2018

-

A new endurance sport will greet Cebuano hardcore athletes next year as the Spartan Race Philippines comes to Cebu in June.

Spartan Race, one of the fastest growing endurance obstacle races in the world, is going to hit Cebu and the organizers are currently checking for places that they could use for the competition here next year.

Spartan Race Philippines CEO Guenter Taus said during the press conference at the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu last Wednesday night that they have already check the possible spots in Cebu and will announce it after all the details will be finalized.

“It is a global obstacle race company and obstacle racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It’s an alternative to triathlons and marathons and the whole idea here is to combine different disciplines into one serious challenge,” said Taus.

Also present in the press conference was Marco Polo Plaza Cebu general manager Brian Connelly, Patricia Mendoza and Fred Joye of Spartan Race-Cebu.

The Spartan Race Philippines and Marco Polo Plaza Cebu also had a contract signing for its partnershipt.

The Spartan race can be done individually or as a team. The event has four categories--the sprint, the super, the beast and super beast.

The sprint distance will cover a 6-kilometer run and 24 obstacles, the super has a 14K run and 30 obstacles, the beast is a half-marathon run with 34 obstacles and super beast is a marathon with 68 obstacles.

For its first event in Cebu, Spartan Race is bringing the sprint distance so that the beginners will get the feel first of Spartan Race, which started in 2010 and was brought to the Philippines last September with an inaugural race in San Mateo, Rizal.

“We invite the sports enthusiasts and athletes in Cebu. Also we’re coordinating with the schools for the students to join the sprint race,” said Mendoza.

Taus said that the Spartan Race will bring a different challenge for those who are used to marathon and triathlon.

“In marathon, all you do is run unlike in Spartan race, you can balance lower and upper body workouts which is more challenging and fulfilling at the same time when you finish the race,” he said.
