Sheeran: This wasn’t my year

-

Many music fans congratulated the Grammys for being more diverse this year with its nominations. However, there was also some downside. A lot of critically acclaimed songs and albums from white artists were shut out.

Ed Sheeran’s album “÷” (“Divide”) and hit song “Shape of You” did not get any nomination from Grammy’s three major awards: Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Record of the Year denotes the best song in a given year. This year’s nominees are “HUMBLE” by Kendrick Lamar, “The Story of O.J.” by Jay-Z, “Redbone” by Childish Gambino (known as Donald Glover in the acting world), “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars and “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber.

The popularity of “Shape of You” was eclipsed only by “Despacito,” which became a top-ranking song in the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 16 weeks. “Shape of You” was No. 1 for 12 weeks, which was more than the other four nominees for Record of the Year.

“HUMBLE” was the only other song that reached the top spot.

“My outlook on it is like, some years you have your year and some years you don’t have your year, and maybe this year wasn’t my year,” Sheeran told Ellen DeGeneres.

DeGeneres said in her show that she was “outraged” that Sheeran was not nominated for Song of the Year.

“But that’s the point, that’s where you win,” said the 26-yearold English crooner. “That’s where the validation comes from, where you actually see people—genuine people—enjoying the songs. I’d rather have a lifetime of people coming up to me and saying, like, ‘This song affects me in this way, in a positive way,’ ‘This song is my wedding song,’ ‘This song was my first kiss,’ than anything else.”
