OUR LAST HURRAH

- BY JOELLE PILANDE / USC Intern

Every school opening or the start of a semester sees students beaming with excitement, motivation and enthusiasm. Buying new notebooks, pens and other school supplies is a must, as students sport their brand new bags, shoes and outits in the campus on the irst few weeks of school. New classrooms are eagerly sought out and new teachers and classmates pique the curiosity of the students. However, one’s interest in school and studying usually dies down after a while.

During the last few months of the semester, students are most likely already feeling tired and unmotivated to study— or worse, lose interest in attending their classes. But the last couple of months of the semester are usually the most crucial ones, given that the midterms and inals scores have more weight in the computation of grades. Slacking off and putting school work aside just won’t work. So how can students cope with the enormous load of school work? Here are a few reminders on how to tackle the last few months in school.

Get some “me time.”

While it’s understandable that school work takes the most of our time, we need to balance our personal life and school life to avoid burnout. Set aside a “me time” where you can just relax and do what you want to do. Having a little bit of rest from your hectic schedule will help your body recuperate from all the stress.

Keep tabs on your tasks.

Organize the things that you need to do so that no task slips your mind. Have a to-do list in a notebook or use your gadgets to keep track of your assignments, projects and other school work. You can also leave sticky notes on your desk, mirror, or laptop/computer to remind you of what needs to get done. Having them in paper and posting it somewhere where you’re always going to see it help a lot, especially if you’re someone who tends to forget things.

Break big tasks into small ones.

Big important projects can be daunting for students especially if it’s not a group work. One technique in completing big projects is to do it little by little. By breaking big tasks into smaller ones, it makes the whole project a lot more manageable. Just be sure to do the small tasks in the proper order so that the inal outcome of the project would be coherent.

Get enough sleep.

Getting enough hours of sleep is important in order for our mind and body to function properly. Sure, living on coffee is doable, but research says that the more sleep we get, the more improved our brain function becomes. According to a study by the American Physiological Society, “consolidation” or the process in which your brain strengthens the memories and skills you learned happens during sleep. So if you have a lot of memorizing to do and information that you

Reward yourself.

Motivate yourself to do the dreaded school work by giving yourself little treats for every task that you have done. You can reward yourself by eating your favorite snack after studying, buying yourself something you’ve always wanted after completing a major project or going out with your friends (or special someone) after accomplishing your school work.
