University of the Visayas (UV) staged a fourth quarter comeback to beat Don Bosco Technology Center, 39-37, and win the Under-10 title of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) 2017 3rd Conference yesterday at the Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu Mango Ave. Campus Gym. “I’m (at a) loss for words. You can really see that the kids really wanted to win. They played with heart. Even though they would fall down, they would stand up and continue to play. They really wanted to win,” UV head coach Ronald Bucao told SunStar Cebu after UV won its fourth division title of the CYBL this conference.

University of the Visayas (UV) played with a ton of heart, never gave up and staged a huge fourth quarter comeback to beat Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC), 39-37, and win the Under-10 title of the Cebu Youth Basketball League (CYBL) 2017 - 3rd Conference yesterday at the Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC).

“I’m lost for words. You can really see that the kids really wanted to win. They played with heart. Even though they would fall down, they would stand up and continue to play. They really wanted to win,” UV head coach Ronald Bucao told SunStar Cebu after UV won its fourth division title of the CYBL this conference.

Both squads were evenly matched at the onset and a scoring battle between UV’s Jan Mark Toring and DBTC’s AJ Prudenciado ensued. Toring had eight points, mostly from the charity stripe, while Prudenciado had nine.

With the game tied at 12-12 after a quarter of action, UV started to pull away after outscoring DBTC in the second for an 18-13 halftime lead.

The lead, however, was shortlived as Prudenciano exploded for eight points in the third period and gave DBTC a 2822 lead.

“I instructed them to really defend. I told them that we needed stops, that we needed to score, and whatever happens, even if we make errors, we go back and make it up on defense,” said Bucao.

Bucao’s pep talk worked, as the Baby Green Lancers sparked an 8-0 run in the 3:50 mark with a two-pointer by Carl Cortes, an up-and-under move by Toring and back-to-back jumpers by Harvin Largosa for a 33-32 lead with 1:10 left.

Sean Reroma ended the bleeding by sinking two free throws to give the lead back to the Greywolves, 34-33.

Angelo Fuentes, however, hit a crucial three-pointer for a 36-34 advantage for UV. But Nyjah Escobido answered with two points on the other end to tie it at 36-36. Cortes brought the ball back up quickly for a lay up on the other end to give the lead back to UV, 38-36.

Prudenciado, who came up big for DBTC in the first and third quarters, missed two important free throws that could have tied the game. Though Cortes was fouled and also missed his charities, Omar Canoy split his free throws with three seconds left on the clock to trim it to 38-37.

Toring, who was missing most of his free throws in the fourth, was sent to the line with a second left. He missed his first and converted his second for the final tally.

Toring led UV with 14 points, while Fuentes added nine points, all from beyond the arc. Prudenciano led DBTC with 17 points.

We played with more and intensity and energy because we wanted to compete with them. They were big but not that quick. That’s why we used speed to our advantage,” said Bucao. /
