The whole-day activity was organized to honor Cebuano-Chinese heritage and its guests included Chinese Consul-General in Cebu Shi Yong

In support of the celebration of Chinese New Year, the Cebu Provincial Government organized the Sugbo Chinoy Day 2018 as a way to pay tribute to Cebuano-Chinese heritage last Wednesday, Feb. 14.

It was the second time that the Province held the event.

Provincial Tourism Office head Joselito “Boboi” Costas said he is planning to have it annually.

“We want to pay tribute and we want to celebrate our Chinese heritage as Cebuanos,” he said.

“We’re doing this because we want to remind Cebuanos about influences we got from our Chinese ancestors,” he added.

A lion and dragon dance was also held in the legislative building, which was witnessed by Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, Chinese Consul General in Cebu Shi Yong, members of the Provincial Board, and Capitol employees.

Costas said that they held the celebration on Valentine’s Day since Friday, Chinese New Year, was a holiday; by coincidence, red is a favorite color for both events.

The whole-day event was open to the public, and visitors enjoyed different booths located outside the Capitol Social Hall that offered Chinese paper-making, horoscopes, calligraphy, temporary henna tattoos, and fortune-telling.

In the afternoon, discussions on Cebuano-Chinese heritage took place. Topics included Cebuano-Chinese history, Chinese influence in Cebu, and Chinese lessons on financial management.

A cooking demonstration on Chinese cuisine also took place after the series of discussions.
