Maternal impression

In the 18th century, Chang and Eng, the famous Siamese twin, were displayed in Europe and America. But they were barred in France. The French government was afraid pregnant women might see them and would experience “maternal impression.” The babies in their wombs might come out similar to the twin.

We consider this belief superstitious because there is no scientific or medical basis that this would be the result. There may be no solid basis or explanation, but I believe there is psychic or psychological cause and effect.

I have a cousin who was pregnant. She boarded a passenger jeepney one day. In front of her was a woman passenger, cuddling a baby with harelip. My cousin felt a strong feeling of pity for the baby. When she delivered, a boy with harelip came out.

The uncle of my wife used to make fun of a neighbor, a young man with unusually large and wide nose. Often she would chase this man and fondle his nose, on the sight of many neighbors laughing at hte older man’s antics. When his wife delivered, a baby girl with unusually large and wide nose came out.

I believe there is somehow a connection between the observer and the observed, when the observer feels a strong feeling, even of pity, mockery or ridicule, or even admiration.

My wife admired the eyes of Sylvester Stallone. We were both fans of Rambo movies. She used to admire the posters of the actor. We never saw him in person. Our second daughter, the youngest, was born with eyes similar to that of the actor.

Somehow, maternal impression matters and has strong influence on the unborn. So my advice to pregnant women, avoid having strong feelings for or against an ugly person, animal or object.--Chito E. Germino, Mandaue City

Flood and rain

Some city streets are once again experiencing flash floods when it rains heavily. Some of those streets develop potholes. How well are we preparing for the rainy season?--Deo R. Cal
