A lapse in security: CSBT head on loose firearms

Officials of the Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) are trying to find out how 46 unlicensed .45 pistols got through the facility without being detected.

Joey Herrera, CSBT operations manager, said they are now scrutinizing their closed-circuit television cameras.

Last Saturday, three persons, who were about to board a boat bound for Dipolog City, were arrested by police and Coast Guard personnel stationed in Samboan for bringing the unlicensed firearms.

In an interview, Herrera believes that the smuggled items went undetected as its carriers may have ridden a taxi to the terminal before riding a bus.

He said that bags and cargoes in taxis entering the terminal are not being inspected as this is only being done in the north and south entrances where metal detectors have been placed.

He admitted there was a lapse on the part of CSBT as they failed to coordinate with the drivers and conductors in helping check the bags and cargoes brought by their passengers.

Herrera pointed out that security in the terminal was reduced after the police personnel initially assigned there were pulled out by the Police Regional Office 7 earlier this month.

Following the confiscation of unlicensed firearms, Herrera said they will strictly inspect every luggage and cargo brought inside the terminal. They also plan to field K9 dogs.

Herrera also said he plans to ask the Cebu Provincial Government to purchase x-rays to help detect contraband. /
