Consolacion Sarok survives late rally by La Consolacion College to win Magis Eagles basketball league
The Consolacion Sarok survived a late fightback from La Consolacion College (LCC) of Bacolod City and escaped with a 90-87 win in the championship game of the 1st Magis Eagles Basketball Invitational League title in the Danao City Civic Center last Sunday.
Consolacion weathered the gallant fourth quarter rally of LCC to win the title in the threeday basketball tournament organized by the coaches and parents of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC).
LCC put up 34 points in the final quarter to give Consolacion a scare before yielding by three points.
Patrick Montano sank a three-pointer with 1:20 left in the game to give Consolacion the 9084 lead. LCC’s John Louie Frios split his charities and Kurt Sudayan made a layup for the final tally.
Consolacion had a double-figure lead in all three quarters and was going to the final quarter with a comfortable 7155 edge before LCC made a run, trimming down the deficit to only three, 84-87, after a jumper from John Michael Herdon with 2:25 to play.
Montano finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Errol Pastor, who was named the Most Valuable Player, nearly had a triple double with seven points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists.
Braven Padayogdog and Andre Chua added 18 and 16 points for Consolacion, which had a 4530 lead at the half after a strong 23-12 opening quarter.
Nico Apostol exploded for a game-high 36 points and Herdon added 23 for the runner-up team.
Meanwhile, the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) defeated the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles, 79-56, in the battle for third.
Michael Vergara had 24 points for UNO-R, while teammates Patrick Dave Yulo and Steve Enema added 15 and 10 points. /
