CANIGA GETS TO WORK

Just a few weeks after being installed as a new barangay councilor, Yaw Yan Ardigma founder Ekin Caniga gets to work right away and starts a grassroots training program for Barangay Day-as

Newly-installed Barangay Day-as Councilor Master Benigno “Ekin” Caniga together with the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) started a grassroots sports training program in Day-as and its neighboring barangays.

“My program for sports is the ‘Barangay Grassroots Program: Iwas Droga sa Kabataan’, which we plan to implement within this year,” said the Yaw-Yan Ardigma Cebu founder and CEO. Caniga also heads the committees on sports and peace and order in Day-as. “We’ve come up with this program because it’s quite hard to encourage kids to join a sport. That’s why we want to provide free sports training, through the support of our council and CCSC, so that we can encourage more kids to participate. This project is not just for the youth of Barangay Day-as but also for our neighboring barangays, which I have already invited to join this activity.” The neighboring barangays that will be included in the free sports program are Zapatera, Tejero, T. Padilla and Kamagayan.

According to Caniga, this project is similar to CCSC’s grassroots program in the Cebu Sports Institute. CCSC will provide Barangay Day-as with coaches and equipment for specific sports in the program.

The sports offered are mixed martial arts, muay thai, arnis, karate, boxing, badminton and volleyball. It is open to children five years old and older.

The program will end with an activity that will showcase the children’s talent in their chosen sport.

Caniga, along with Master Pedro “Junaz” Azarcon Jr., started training the tanods of Barangay Day-as in arnis and the use of handcuffs last week. /
