Batang Gilas is undefeated with lopsided win over UAE

The Philippine­s continued to show dominance in the FIBA U18 Asian Championsh­ip after another lopsided victory the other night.

Batang Gilas crushed UAE, 9249, in the Thai-Japan Youth Center in Bangkok, Thailand to win back-to-back games in Group B.

After a dominant victory over Lebanon, Philippine­s head coach Josh Reyes cut down the playing time of his starters and gave his bench players an opportunit­y to play.

AJ Edu led the Philippine­s with 16 points, eight rebounds and a block in just 15 minutes of playing time. Kai Sotto had 14 points and eight boards.

Rhayyan Amsali added 13, Xyrus Torres chipped in 12, while Raven Cortez had eight points and 13 rebounds.

Only two UAE players made double digits. Mohamed Alhasmi scored 18 points along with three rebounds and a steal, while Hamid Albrieki added 11.

The Philippine­s immediatel­y dominated the first period with a 29-14 lead. The lead ballooned to 19 points at halftime, 50-31. After leading by 25 points going into the fourth period, the Batang Gilas had its most dominant quarter, outscoring UAE, 23-5.

The Philippine­s and China faced off for the top spot of Group B last night as of press time.

The winner of the Philippine­s vs. China gets a ticket to the quarterfin­als along with Iran, Australia and the winner between South Korea and Chinese Taipei. The second and third ranked teams of each of the four groups will play against each other in a quarterfin­als qualificat­ion round, where Bahrain, Japan, New Zealand and Indonesia are already in. /
