-

Around 3,500 runners and fitness enthusiasts are expected to show up for the cash-rich Don Sergio Osmeña Sr. Memorial Run 2018, which will start at the Sergio Osmeña Sr. marker at the corner of Lapu-Lapu St., Osmeña Blvd. and will end at Cebu City Sports Center on Sept. 9.

The run, organized by the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) and supported by the local government unit of Cebu City will have over P500,000 in prizes and will have the 21-kilometer, 10K, 5K and 3K categories.

The men’s and women’s champion in the half-marathon race will win P20,000 each, the second placers will pocket P15,000 while the third placers will get P10,000. The fourth to 20th placers will also win cash prizes.

“We are inviting the runners to this run. This is friendliest race and also one of the richest race in Cebu,” CCSC chairman Edward Hayco said on a press conference yesterday.

Cebu City Councilor Eugenio Gabuya, who’s the deputy mayor for sports, announced that he has filed an ordinance the other day related to fun runs and on preventing the use of plastics.

“I have submitted an ordinance related to fun runs. If this will be passed, we will prohibit the single-use-plastics in runs. The runners can bring their hydration bottles. This is for environmental change,” said Gabuya. “Our point here is with this ordinance we can tell the organizers to police their participants on the use of plastics.”

CCSC commissioner Alan Delantar said that there will be runners outside of Cebu who will be joining. /
