The Book of Sirach

-

The Book of Sirach is better than the Ten Commandments and the Laws of Moses. It is best for philosophy, psychology, psychiatry and psychotheraphy. Why did not the Roman Catholic Church teach the book’s contents to its members? The book at least teaches us good manners and right conduct.

It is the fifth book of the eight Deuterocanonicals in the Catholic Bible. It is obvious that no priest had ever read it. One does not have to read the entire Bible. If he or she reads the Book of Sirach, he or she would have the lessons needed in life. Here are a few teachings from the book: --”Wisdom that is not expressed is like a treasure that has been hidden--both are useless.” (Sirach 41:14)

--”Wealth and strength give confidence but the fear of the Lord can give you even greater confidence. When you fear the Lord you need nothing more; it is all the support you need.” (Sirach 40:26)

--”Wealth that has been obtained dishonestly is like a stream that runs full during a thunderstorm, tumbling rocks as it flows but then suddenly going dry.” (Sirach 40: 13-14)

--”Acts of kindness and charity are as lasting as eternity.” (Sirach 40:17)

--”Brothers and helpers are good to have in times of trouble but it will be an even greater help if you have made a practice of giving to the poor.” (Sirach 40:24) --Chito E. Germino of Pakna-an, Mandaue City
