Fiel wins Cepca monthly qualifier

Percival Fiel outlasted Cecilio Aberion in a tiebreak to win the Cebu Executives & Profession­als Chess Associatio­n (Cepca) Monthly Qualifying Tournament-October Edition at the Barracks Chess Club, Robinsons’ Galleria Cebu last Sunday, Oct. 28.

Fiel and Aberion had identical 4.0 points after five rounds but the former won the championsh­ip with 10.5 tiebreak points over the latter’s 9.5 tiebreak points.

Fiel, who works as a senior ecosystem management specialist for the Department of Environmen­t and Natural Resources, recorded four wins against one loss in a tournament rated by the National Chess Federation of the Philippine­s.

Fiel beat Jun Pasion and Roberto Inocian in the first two rounds before losing to Norman Olayvar in the third round. He finished off strong with a win over Jun Kidlat and John Velarde in the fourth and fifth round to finish with 4.0 points.

Aberion, who settled for second place, earned his 4.0 points from wins over Inocian, Maximus Benedict Serbise and Norman Olayvar in rounds three to five after losing to Ruel Hortelano in the second round. He won against Joel Atillo in the opening round.

Velarde, Hortelano and Kidd Salazar completed this month’s top five with identical 3.5 points.

Fiel has qualified to the Cepca Grand Finals set in December. /
