DBTC, Ateneo dominate Day 1 of SunStar Cup

Brothers help DBTC win Players 6, 8 divisions; SHSAteneo de Cebu beats rival STC via shootout to win Girls 16 crown

The Don Bosco Technologi­cal Center (DBTC) grabbed two titles, while Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu outlasted rival St. Theresa’s College in a pulsating shootout in the first day of the SunStar Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center last Saturday, Nov. 24.

DBTC won the Players 6 and 8 divisions, with brothers Christian and Carlo Felesis earning the MVPs.

In the Players 6 division, DBTC finished second in the group stage after posting a 4-1 record for 12 points, trailing the Einstein Mighty Geeks. In Group 2, DBTC B got the top spot with 13 points, while University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Balamban finished second with 11 points.

In the crossover semifinal, DBTC A got past sister team DBTC B, 1-0, while USJ-R Balamban handed the Mighty Geeks its first loss, 6-5, via shootout. In the final, DBTC A zoomed ahead 3-0 and never looked back to win the title, relegating USJ-R to second place.

In the Players 8 Division, DBTC A topped their group after winning all three matches and got past Springdale Crius, 1-0, in the quarterfin­als before beating Giuseppe FC, 2-0, in the semis to arrange a finals match with the visiting CNN Dolphins of San Carlos City.

The Dolphins also topped their group with a 3-0 record and beat DBTC B, 4-3, in the quarterfin­als and DBTC F, 1-0, in the semis. In the finals, it was a close contest with DBTC A winning the crown, 1-0.

In the Girls 16 division, SHS-Ateneo topped their group with a 2-1 record, while STC also topped Group 1 after winning all four games. In the semifinals, STC beat the Guardian Strikers, 1-0, while Ateneo got past Labogon, 1-0.

The finals was a close affair with neither team scoring in regulation and the shootout going into sudden death before Ateneo finally bag the crown thanks to Cassandra Gillamac, who was named the MVP. /
