The Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 will not allow backpacks at the Basilica Menore del Santo Niño during its Sinulog activities for security.

The measure, which will be implemented during the novena masses for the Fiesta Senyor, is supported by Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, who chairs the peace and order council.

PRO 7 Chief Debold Sinas said they will drive persons with backpacks away from the church crowd.

“Kon naa moy back pack, paulion na mo. Wala puy depository of back packs ug mga dagkong bag. Dili mo pasudlon sa activity area. Papaulion mo. Kong ibilin ninyo na dili gihapon pwede (If you have a backpack, we’ll send you home. There won’t be any depository for backpacks and big bags. They won’t be allowed in the activity area. They’ll be sent home. You can’t leave the bags anywhere, too),” warned Sinas.

He said that is the police had been strict with security in the Basilica, they’d be even more firm now.

They will not also allow backpacks during the Walk with Mary and the Solemn Procession.

Sinas said he wants the public to know about the policy as early as now.

With the policy, the flow of people in the Basilica’s gates will be faster.

He said there will be no more inspection on backpacks, the owners will immediately be sent out, said Sinas.

It was agreed during the security conference with church officials for the Sinulog festivities to install cordon gates on Osmeña Blvd. near the Basilica’s gate and beside the Magellan’s Cross.

Backpacks, says the police, are usually used in crimes and terrorism.
